This steak sandwich is made with thin sliced sirloin, onions and served on a hoagie bun with American cheese. The beef and onions take about 10 minutes to make then it’s only a few minutes to build the sandwich and bake it until the cheese is melted and the bread is toasty. This is a quick and easy steak and cheese sandwich that everyone will love.
If you cook dinner most nights of the week you know that switching things up is important to keep things interesting. At my house we make it a sandwich night every once in a while. Like this sirloin steak sandwich, a Cuban steak sandwich (pan con bistec) and Italian sausage sandwich are family favorites.

Ingredients
- Beef – We use sirloin steak because it is tender and reasonably priced. Sirloin is lean and does not have a lot of connective tissue, so it is perfect to slice up and fry quickly.
- Seasoning – The beef is simply seasoned with salt (we use kosher salt), garlic powder and black pepper. Nothing overpowering so that the rest of the ingredients shine through.
- Oil – The steak is fried at a high temperature so use a neutral (flavorless) oil with a high smoke point (we use canola oil)
- Onion – White onion has the perfect flavor for the sirloin steak sandwich. In a pinch, a yellow onion will work too.
- Bread – Hoagie or sub rolls are ideal for the steak sandwiches.
- Cheese – For me, the best cheese for steak sandwiches is white American. But feel free to use your favorite, as long as it’s good for melting.
You will also need:
- Large baking sheet
- Parchment paper
Recipe tips
- Instead of slicing the steak yourself ask the butcher at your local supermarket to cut sirloin steak into the thinnest possible slices. Then all that’s left is to cut them into strips.
- Use the largest skillet you have so the sliced steak can be arranged in a thin layer.
- We will be cooking at a high temperature so use an oil that has a high smoke point. We use canola oil.
- This recipe makes enough for 4 large sandwiches. If you want to make these for a party, cut each sandwich into three pieces to make 12 smaller sandwiches. Or purchase dinner rolls and make little steak sandwiches.
- Keep the steak out at room temperature for about 20 minutes, provided that it is cool in your kitchen. We want the meat to lose its chill and not be refrigerator cold when it hits the hot pan.
Instructions
Slice the steaks: Start with a thick piece of sirloin and use a sharp knife to cut them into very thin slices, then cut those slices into thin strips.
- Season the sliced steak with the salt, garlic powder and black pepper, stir well to distribute the seasoning.
- Next, slice the onion but don’t make them too thin so that they hold up to cooking.
- Cut the 8 slices of cheese diagonally to end up with 16 triangles.
- If your hoagie buns are not pre-sliced, slice them in half lengthwise. That’s it for the prep work, this is a quick and simple dinner everyone will enjoy.
- Preheat the oven to 300°F.
Fry the steak
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over high heat. When the oil is hot and shimmering, add the sliced steak. Arrange it around the skillet so that it is in one layer. Cook the steak, without disturbing, for 3 minutes.
- Stir the sliced steak and arrange in one layer again. Continue cooking for 1-3 minutes or until the liquid is gone and the steak is sizzling and browned. Stir occasionally, arranging it in one layer after each stir.
- Lower the heat to medium and pile the steak to one side of the skillet. Add the onions to the empty space.
- Cook the onions for approximately 2-3 minutes or until they soften and are cooked to your liking. Stir them frequently by moving them around in their space without disturbing the meat.
- Combine the steak with the onions and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Take the skillet off the heat.
Make the sandwiches
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place 2 cheese triangles (one slice) on the bottom of each bun.
- Divide the steak and onions into 4 portions. Next, add a portion of steak and onions to each bread and top with 2 pieces of cheese (one slice).
- Place the steak sandwich on the baking sheet. Bake the sandwiches 5-8 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the bread is toasty on the edges.
- Serve and enjoy with chips, fries or your favorite side dish.
